Curls are a beautiful and versatile hairstyle, but achieving the perfect look can sometimes feel like a mystery. Here at Alter Salon in Belton, Texas, we understand the struggle! That's why we've put together a guide to help you curl your hair in different ways, so you can embrace your natural texture or create stunning new styles.

*Know Your Curls:

* Curl Type: Understanding your curl pattern (loose waves, tight coils, etc.) is key to choosing the right tools and techniques.

* Hair Thickness: Fine hair might need smaller barrels or heatless methods, while thick hair can handle larger curlers or irons.

* Hair Porosity: High porosity hair absorbs products quickly, so opt for lighter styling creams. Low porosity hair has a tougher time absorbing products, so use something richer.

*Curling Techniques:

* Classic Curling Iron: This is a versatile option for most curl types. Section your hair, wrap it around the barrel (holding for a few seconds), and release to create smooth, defined curls. Experiment with different barrel sizes for tighter or looser curls.

* Flat Iron Waves: Believe it or not, a flat iron can create gorgeous waves! Clamp down on small sections of hair and twist slightly as you glide down the strand. Practice makes perfect with this technique!

Fashion hair colors are all the rage these days, but they require a little more maintenance than your average natural hair color. If you want your fashion hair color to look its best and last as long as possible, here are a few tips:

1. Use a quality shampoo and conditioner. This is especially important for fashion hair colors, as they can be more delicate than natural hair colors. Use a shampoo and conditioner that are designed for color-treated hair, and avoid using harsh soaps or detergents.

2. Don't wash your hair too often. Over-washing can strip your hair of its natural oils and make it more susceptible to breakage. Aim to wash your hair every 3-4 days, or even less often if your hair is naturally oily.

3. Use a heat protectant. When you style your hair, always use a heat protectant to prevent damage. Heat can cause color to fade and hair to break, so it's important to use a product that will help protect your hair from the heat.

4. Get regular touch-ups. As your fashion hair color fades, you'll need to get regular touch-ups to maintain the look you want. This is especially important if you have a bold color, like pink or purple.

5. Be patient. Fashion hair colors take time to fade, so don't expect your color to last forever. Be patient and enjoy your new look!

Balayage is a beautiful hair color technique that can add dimension and highlights to your hair. However, it's important to take care of your balayage hair properly in order to maintain its color and health. Here are a few tips:

**Use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner.** Sulfates are harsh chemicals that can strip away the color from your hair. Look for sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner that are specifically designed for color-treated hair.

**Wash your hair less often.** The less you wash your hair, the less color will fade. Aim to wash your hair every other day, or even every few days.

**Use a heat protectant before styling your hair.** Heat styling can damage your hair, so it's important to use a heat protectant before using a hair dryer, curling iron, or flat iron.

**Get a touch-up every few weeks.** As your balayage hair fades, you'll need to get a touch-up every few weeks to maintain its color.

By following these tips, you can keep your balayage hair looking beautiful for weeks and months to come.

Here are some additional tips:

**Use a deep conditioner once a week.** Deep conditioners can help to moisturize and repair your hair, which is especially important if you have balayage hair. **Avoid using harsh chemicals on your hair.** This includes bleach, ammonia, and other chemicals that can damage your hair.

Are you washing your hair properly?

We assume we are washing our hair correctly-I mean we’ve been doing it for years obviously I’m doing ok right?

Well chances are there are some things you can adjust to help promote scalp and hair health and this article is going to help you nail down shampoo tips to get your best hair!

  1. You may need a pre-shampoo treatment, if you are going longer between washes using some type of preshampoo treatment can break down build of dry shampoo and oil.
  2. Shampoo your hair twice (Yes, we are telling you to rinse and repeat) the first shampoo removes product, build up, and all the icky stuff that your hair likes to hold onto. The second wash actually cleanses your scalp. Make sure you are really getting in there and exfoliating your scalp, this is made even easier with a scalp exfoliator.
  3. Condition from the mids to ends, keep the conditioner away from your scalp as much as possible while still moisturizing all your ends and giving them the love they deserve. If you want to go the extra mile you can comb though those luscious locks with a wide tooth comb to distribute product evenly.
  4. Dry shampoo right after your hair is dry, don’t wait for your scalp to get oily. You will use less dry shampoo overtime by doing this since it won’t get overly oily your product won’t have to work as hard
  5. Don’t Shampoo too often! Shampooing daily can actually trick your scalp into thinking it's dry because your scalp is constantly being stripped of all the oil it needs so you will start to overproduce oil leading to an oiler scalp overtime.

In 2021 we started to see the rise of the '70s shag replacing our sleek cuts and blended layers. For color, we started to see bold money pieces which transition into bold color blocking everyone has been rocking for 2022. We also saw the rise of Y2K fashion again and with our low rise jeans we also got to rock the Rachel again. So if 2022 was the year of bold colors and the end of side parts, what will 2023 bring us? Well luckily trends have cycles! We will be breaking down the trends we think will overtake 2023 like your muffin top and low rise jeans.

We've touched on the 70s and '90s coming back but this year we expect to see more of these two eras mashed up. Square bangs of the '90s but with a shaggy bangs of the '70s.

TicToc and Instagram have given people so much knowledge on their natural curls that we predict more people will embrace their natural curls. The trend of layered cuts has really made embracing texture so much easier! These cuts look amazing with an unkempt waves and lots of natural texture.

2022 was the year of coppery natural lived in red's so for 2023 we expect to see a cinnamon brunette to replace a natural red. This year will also see the rise of deep reds and the cherry cola burgundies swinging the pendulum the other way into more fashion reds and less naturals.

We asked all seven of our stylists for their favorite tips and tricks on curly hair. Please keep in mind all curls are different and its always best to come to the salon and let us help you find a maintainable hair care routine for your lifestyle and hair type. These are some great general tips that go over everything from styling methods and tips, what to ask your stylist for, and frizz free curls.

Sadie's favorite tip is to not brush your hair while it’s dry, wait until you are in the shower with conditioner in your hair. Then use a wide tooth comb to distribute the conditioner evenly throughout your hair. Sadie's most loved products for this are the Vicious Curl Moisture Surge, Allsoft Mega, and Frizz Dismiss lines by Redken.

Ari suggests you try to add moisture at each step of your haircare routine. Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner she tends to reach for the vicious curl line for this. Then add at least one moisturizing product some of Ari’s top two picks for this are the Acid bonding leave in by Redken, IllumiOil by Leyton House.

Eight common hair myths busted

1. You should come to your color appointment with dirty hair.

While we don’t expect freshly washed hair color will apply more evenly to cleanish hair with no build up. This myth comes from the early days of hair color when it was so harsh, we needed buildup of oils to keep the hair healthy. Now our color is much gentler while it can break through oils and some products it best to have shampooed about 48 hours before your appointment, keeping in mind not to rough up your scalp too much be gentle.

2. Trimming your hair makes it grow faster.

While trims are necessary to long healthy hair it doesn’t make your hair grow faster but prevents split ends from traveling further up the hair strand eventually leading to a bigger cut, verses a light dusting every eight weeks.

3. There is no such thing as too much protein when it comes to most brands.

The myth of over adding protein to your hair comes from the early days of take-home haircare when the protein was animal based, now most protein is plant based and what your hair doesn’t need washes down the drain.

4. Shampoos need to be changed often as they stop working for your hair after a while.
